Tips For Landing the Perfect Job After a Divorce
Taking the leap back into the ‘working world’ after being a stay-at-home spouse/parent for years can be intimidating.
We’ve put together a list of tips to help you put your best foot forward and secure a job you’ll love.
Create A LinkedIn Account
Everything is online these days, and networking is no exception. Spend some time developing your LinkedIn profile.
Include:
A professional headshot.
Your past education and work experience.
Any relevant skills you may have.
Any other accomplishments or volunteer work.
Not only will LinkedIn help you make business connections, but you can also search for jobs on the site.
Edit Your Resume
Think of your resume as your first impression. That employer is getting to know you based on this information. What do you think they should know?
Don’t rush through the process of writing your resume; make sure it is perfect. Double check that it includes all of your work experience, skills, and relevant background. Ask family and friends to proofread and ensure there are no typos.
Be Open-Minded
Be open to jobs you never thought you’d have. Even if it’s not your dream job, it’s a start. Only looking for one or two different types of jobs will severely limit your opportunities. And you never know - you may end up loving it!
Also, don’t feel like you can only apply for jobs that you have all of the qualifications for. Even if you don’t think you’ll get the job, it doesn’t hurt to apply! You’ll never know unless you try.
Do Mock Interviews
If you haven’t participated in an interview in years, you’ll likely need to brush up on your skills. Ask a family member or friend to sit down with you to practice. Not only will this help you with your interview etiquette, but it will also help you brainstorm answers for questions they may ask in the real interview.
Work With A Recruiter
If you have been searching for a job for a while and aren’t having much luck, contact a recruiter. They can work with you to find available positions that match your skill set.
Recruiters can also provide you with advice about what steps you can take to improve your job search.
